I yanked this photo from Jennie Lyn Hamilton’s Facebook page. Thank you for posting it, Jennie Lyn and thanks for bringing your keen eye!
I have several I will be posting when I return from Terlingua, as well, none of which will be all that exciting because they were all shot with my “crap shoot”. However, Joe Cashiola shot video of the performance and I have asked him to provide me with a web-quality clip that I can post here. Stay tuned.
I’m currently at Tumbleweed Laundry – home of frama, Marfa’s only coffee shop is in the laundromat. Seriously, it’s good – and not headed to Terlingua. My co-pilot got called in to get an order of laundry so we’re delayed a few hours. No biggie. Terlingua will be there when we get there.
In the meanwhile, here’s Jennie Lyn’s gorgeous photograph of Romi’s street performance last night. I believe it was a scene from La Araña. Romi danced for her lover, played by Miguel Rangel. They joined together in dance until interrupted by a man from her past. Ty Mitchell shot her dead in the street and she died in Miguel’s arms.
(UPDATE: Romi sent me an email today (10/25) explaining the performance and getting a good laugh at what a bad observer I am. Hahaha. See the comments below for a more appropriate and accurate interpretation. Love you, Romi!)
The 30 or so spectators held sparklers, providing an eery lighting effect against Romi’s wedding gown (made from WWII parachutes, as are many of the pieces in her Vintage 1948 line).

Hey everyone! I just got this email from Romi explaining how terribly I interpreted not only the name but the entire context of the performance from Friday night. What can I say? I was totally guessing! Hahaha. Here’s what Romi had to say. Hope this clears things up!
“hey girl!
i laughed so hard when i read what you wrote on the camp marfa website-i tried to tell everyone what the performance meant but no one would listen.
la arana? i’m not sure were that came from the song was about La Llorona who is a character from and old mexican tale of a woman who fell in love with a man who did not want children -she had two and to win his love she killed both the kids-he in return of course was like hell no you crazy bitch hahah! so she kills her self and her spirit wonders weeping and looking and crying for her children the symbolism for my performance was that i was the aztec goddess or aztec spirit mother, serpent queen whatever you want to call it! miguel was the spirit of the native american and ty the white man who kills both in the end though miguel was going to kill the white man as well but miguel was really nervous so we cut short. so the song of the weeping woman was appropiate because it was the cry for loss, cry for a land taken etc. so there you go now please if you can correct this it would be highly appreciated, love you mercer and the passionate story you came up with i tell you!!
